Public Lecture of the Master’s Program in Psychology: Understanding Marital Adjustment and Satisfaction Amid Conflict

The Master’s Program in Psychology at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) organized a public lecture titled “When Love Meets Conflict: Navigating Adjustment and Satisfaction in Marriage” on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The event was held at Meeting Room 1, Faculty of Education (FIP) UNY, from 09:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
The lecture featured Prof. Dr. Siti Aishah binti Hassan from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), a distinguished scholar with expertise in family psychology and marital counseling. The event was attended by graduate students of the Master’s Program in Psychology, particularly those specializing in Educational Psychology and Family Psychology.
During the session, participants were introduced to the idea that marriage is a complex system in which love and conflict coexist. Prof. Siti Aishah emphasized that the ability to manage conflict adaptively is a key factor in maintaining both the stability and quality of marital relationships.
The lecture covered important concepts such as marital adjustment and marital satisfaction, as well as various factors influencing these constructs, including interpersonal communication, emotional regulation, and socio-cultural context. Students were also provided with practical insights into how counseling approaches can be applied to assist couples in navigating relational challenges.
The discussion session reflected strong student engagement, as participants actively connected the material with real-life contexts, both in research and professional practice. The questions raised demonstrated a growing interest in marital and family issues that are highly relevant in contemporary society.
This public lecture contributed significantly to strengthening both the academic and professional competencies of graduate students, particularly in the field of family psychology. It also served as a platform to broaden students’ perspectives through international academic exposure.
Through this activity, it is expected that students of the Master’s Program in Psychology UNY will develop a more comprehensive understanding of marital dynamics and be able to apply this knowledge in both research and professional psychological practice.
