Psyimpact: UNY Psychology Master's Student Association Supports Orphanage Children in Expressing Their Emotions

The Master's Student Association of the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (KMM FP UNY) successfully organized Psyimpact 2026, a community engagement program held on 13 June 2026 at Yayasan Sayap Ibu 1 Orphanage. Carrying the theme "Expressing Yourself and Embracing Your Identity," the program was initiated by the Community Service Division of KMM FP as part of its annual commitment to promoting psychological well-being through evidence-based community outreach. The activities were designed using an engaging, interactive, and psychology-informed approach to ensure that participants could meaningfully understand and benefit from the learning experience.

Psyimpact 2026 reflects KMM FP's commitment to integrating academic knowledge with community service by providing opportunities for master's students to apply psychological principles in real-world settings. The program pursued four primary objectives. First, it aimed to deliver psychoeducation to orphanage children regarding mental health, emotional regulation, and personal development. Second, it sought to enhance children's awareness and understanding of the importance of psychological well-being. Third, the program provided master's students with practical experience in applying psychological knowledge and intervention skills within a community context. Finally, Psyimpact was intended to strengthen the collaborative partnership between KMM FP and Yayasan Sayap Ibu 1 as a sustainable partner in community engagement initiatives.

The implementation of Psyimpact was informed by a preliminary needs assessment conducted collaboratively by the Community Service Division and the Research and Development Division of KMM FP. The assessment identified that many children experienced difficulties in expressing their emotions and communicating their personal feelings and needs. Based on these findings, the intervention activities were specifically designed to facilitate emotional expression in a supportive and developmentally appropriate manner.

During the program, participants engaged in an emotion-expression activity by creating facial expressions on prepared emotion-face templates, allowing them to identify and communicate their current emotional experiences. This activity encouraged children to recognize emotions in a safe, creative, and non-threatening environment. The children also participated in a flower-crafting session using decorative wire. Each flower symbolized the uniqueness and intrinsic value of the individual child, reinforcing the message that every person is worthy of appreciation and celebration regardless of their background or life circumstances.

The management of Yayasan Sayap Ibu 1 expressed sincere appreciation for KMM FP's initiative in organizing the program. During the opening ceremony, the Head of the Orphanage, Mr. Feri Rahmawan, M.A., acknowledged the positive impact of the activity and conveyed his gratitude for the collaboration. He also expressed his hope that the partnership would continue in the future, stating, "We hope this activity and our collaboration will continue in the years ahead and not end with this single occasion."

The children's enthusiasm was evident throughout the program. They actively participated in every session, from illustrating emotional expressions to creating symbolic flowers representing themselves. Their engagement reflected the effectiveness of experiential and participatory learning methods in promoting emotional awareness and self-expression among children.

At the conclusion of the program, KMM FP distributed a booklet documenting the activity, including its implementation process, materials, objectives, and outcomes. The booklet is expected to serve as a practical resource for both the children and the orphanage staff, enabling them to revisit the concepts introduced during the program and continue fostering emotional well-being beyond the completion of the community service activity.

Through Psyimpact 2026, KMM FP demonstrated how psychological science can be translated into meaningful community-based interventions that promote emotional development, psychological well-being, and social responsibility. The program not only benefited the participating children by providing opportunities for emotional expression and self-discovery but also strengthened the practical competencies of psychology master's students while reinforcing the Faculty of Psychology's commitment to impactful community engagement
